Lab Contact: Sylvester Arnab
Team: Sarah Merry
Sylvester Arnab is working in collaboration with Playgen Ltd. and staff from Engineering and Computing, Health and Life Sciences and Art and Design to study the influence of collaboration and competition in learning experience within the context of gamification. The pilot is motivated by the fact that collaborative and social learning has demonstrated the nurturing of soft skills, which are an important component of 21st century skills.
The pilot exploits an existing experimental Gamification platform, which is called StarQuest (starquest.eu), part funded by European Commission 7th Framework grant on project COLLAGE, EPSRC I-Case and by PlayGen. The first phase of the pilot involved cohorts of students at three main faculties at Coventry University. Groups were randomly allocated under competitive, collaborative and control modes. The activities on the platform complemented the group courseworks.
Phase 1: Pilot of the first version of the StarQuest platform, embedded in teaching and learning practices along side assessments (e.g. courseworks) outside of the platform (Sept – Dec 2014)
Phase 2: Analysis of findings (Jan – June 2015)
Phase 3: Specification for phase 2 pilot – the new StarQuest version with moodle plugin (July- Aug 2015)
Phase 4: Evaluation and publications of findings (Sept 2015 – June 2016)
Phase 5: Second pilot at the Engineering and Computing, and Health and Life Sciences (Jan – April 2016)
Phase 6: Evaluation (light feedback) (May- June 2016)
