Duoling

Author: Kate Green   15th January 2015

Duoling is a project in collaboration with the Coventry University’s Languages Centre and the Serious Games Lab, aiming to explore pervasive approaches to learning and exploit gamification techniques in contextualising language learning in a more active and engaging way. Billy Brick from Business, Environment and Society (BES) is working with games-specialist Sylvester Arnab and Principal Project Lead Jacqui Speculand to design a modular, user-centred approach to language learning through gamification.

The project aims to provide a novel and engaging alternative to traditional student language learning experiences. It aims to investigate mobile and location-based platform to support pervasive learning: the first stage is a feasibility study on supporting reading, listening, speaking and writing with games-based learning. This will then lead to the development of a phone-application or other method to enable students to engage with a treasure hunt that brings together these skills. We will be collaborating with students who will be taking a leading role in the design and testing of the gamified approach.

The target is to trial a mock-up application by September 2015.
