Ready to become a Digital Leader?

Author: Isabel Galvis   26th September 2016

Digital Leaders is a new and exciting opportunity for Coventry University students to develop digital skills and learn techniques to pass those skills on to others. No matter whether you already are digital savvy or not, enrolled in a undergraduate or a postgraduate course, applications from any students eager to increase their own understanding of the digital world and help others do the same are welcome.

If you are interested in applying to become a Digital Leader you will need to register to attend one of the Intro Sessions, on the 31st of October or the 4th of November. In addition, you will need to attend two thematic workshops and the final session.

  • Intro Sessions (31/10/16 or 4/11/16)
Are you a digital meerkat or a digital eagle? In this introductory session we will explore your own use of digital tools and discover more about your digital behaviours. Get to know the team and find out more about how you can contribute to this exciting project.
  • Thematic Workshop 1 – Social networking and Communication in a digital world (1/11/16 at 2 – 4pm or 7/11/16 at 2 – 4pm)

In this session we will uncover the hidden codes and expectations of online communication. What do you know of the digital footprints you have left behind? You’ll have a chance to create and share your own content that will reflect how great you are!

  • Thematic Workshop 2 – Finding, handling and sharing information (2/11/2016 at 10.30am – 12.30pm or 8/11/2016 at 10.30am – 12.30pm)

This session will give you an open forum to discuss controversial sources and look at the political, social and ethical implications. Do we have a responsibility to filter out the rubbish that we all see on a daily basis online?

  • Thematic Workshop 3 – Security, privacy and well-being in a digital world (3/11/2016 at 2 – 4pm or 9/11/2016 at 2 – 4pm)

In this session we will be looking at the negative impact that online behaviour might have in the connected society we are living in and, on the other side, which capabilities we all should developed to increase well-being in a digital world. We will also recreate different situations in 10 years time, predicting how digital footprint will shape jobs, relationships and identity.

  • Passing it on – Helping peers develop digital competencies (10/11/16 at 10.30am – 12.30pm or 11/11/2016 at 2 – 4pm)

In this final session you will draw on what we have learned during the programme and on your own personal experience to develop plans for sharing our new digital skills with others. With support from the team, we’ll go out into the wild to run our plans past other students. We will then explain how you go on to become a Digital Leader and contribute to delivering the programme.

For your convenience we will repeat each session twice, so you can pick the dates and times that work best for you. Although you only need to attend two out of the three thematic sessions (*) we do encourage your attendance at all of the sessions, as we hope you will find them exciting and beneficial! All sessions will be taking place at The Disruptive Media Learning Lab (3rd Floor of the Lanchester Library).

After attending the sessions you will need to submit an application explaining why you want to become a Digital Leader and how you would plan to pass what you’ve learnt on to your peers. The team of Digital Leaders will need to devise and deliver a number of initiatives (campaigns, workshops, events) throughout 2016-17. There will be catch up meetings on a regular basis and guidance and support will be available from the co-directors of the programme and other members of the team.
