Sony PSP

IMG_5239

Ken Katuragi’s PlayStation Portable was launched in 2004. A games machine first, the PSP also allowed video & music playback. Less innovative than the DS, it was a more powerful (& power hungry) machine with a larger screen. PSP launch titles were almost exclusively ports of PlayStation games, with few original titles. For the smaller PSP Go in 2008 Sony replaced the UMD drive with 16GB of flash memory, enabling owners to download films & games from the PlayStation website.

  • Japan: 2004 – games development ongoing
  • Units sold: 50 million
  • Number of games: 500
