Engage

The Lab has developed a wide range of free and open tools available for all staff to use to engage their learners. If you cannot find what you are looking for in our ‘Toolbox’ then we would be happy to meet you to discuss your individual needs and offer advice and support where we can.

Sometimes, it’s useful to start from the beginning and rethink how and why you want to engage learners in a specific way. We have a few suggestions below of approaches you may want to consider when thinking of how to engage learners.

Collaboration and Student-led Learning

Design your teaching delivery to centre students at the core of the learning activity. Arrange the learning space (physical and online) to meet the needs of the students, and facilitate their learning by guiding them through group activities and discussion materials.

Accessibility and Equity

Ensure your teaching delivery and content is accessible to all learners. Design your teaching activities so that all learners are able to access necessary resources. This can include making sure all learners have access to appropriate technologies (devices, software and web space) and sign-posting ethical free alternatives where there is no course provision.

Framing the Learning Journey

Consider how you can frame the topic area grounded in a real-world context and communicate this and the learning journey ahead in your delivery. By doing this learners will understand the importance of the learning activity and how this knowledge and experience can be applied beyond education.

Confidence Building and Support

Support learners to build confidence in their abilities and capacity to learn. A lack of willingness to engage can often come down to confidence or knowing how to access support. Simple activities that facilitate learners through articulating abstract ideas, foster creative thinking or support complex problem solving can make a world of difference in showing learners that they are capable of anything.
