Overview

Coventry.domains provides CU students and staff with opportunities to develop Digital Fluency while building their own self-hosted websites, manging their web hosting and experimenting with a range of web publishing systems, most notably WordPress.org.

This initiative is based on the Domains of One’s Onw (DoOO) approach, originally devised at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) and now adopted by other institutions around the globe – Coventry being the first one to do so in Europe.

As stated by Jim Groom, one of the creators of DoOO at UMW and co-founder of our partner Reclaim Hosting: “Faculty and students must have a domain and web hosting of their own if they are to truly understand and engage the deeper possibilities of the open web” (TEDx talk at U Sagrado Corazon, 2013).

The possibility for students to engage with the Open Web publishing opportunities enabled by Coventry.domains as part of their studies allows them to take more ownership over their online presence by creating online portfolios and thematic websites without relying on third party platforms that give them much more limited control.

Coventry.domains provides lecturers with a sandbox for exploring emerging scholarly practices and may be used for a wide range of academic purposes: designing sites to house course resources, creating dedicated sites for research projects, exploring new tools for teaching and learning, etc.

You can read more on what students and staff can learn from engaging with DoOO initiatives in this post that Audrey Watters wrote during her Visiting Fellowship at DMLL: Why ‘A Domain of One’s Own’ Matters (For the Future of Knowledge).

Beyond the technical infrastructure for this, Coventry.domains offers learning materials and activities that are available as Open Education Resources (OER). You can find them on this site: https://coventry.domains/learn/
